Cases of monkeypox decrease 21% globally

GENEVA (REUTERS) – The number of monkeypox cases recorded worldwide fell 21 percent last week after a month-long upward trend, a sign that the outbreak in Europe has begun to subside, the World Health Organization said Thursday. The WHO reported 5,907 new cases weekly, and said two countries — Iran and Indonesia — recorded their first infections. More than 45,000 infections have been reported in 98 countries since the end of April. 60 percent of last month’s cases occurred in the Americas, the WHO said, and 38 percent in Europe. Transmission in America “continues to rise sharply.” During a press conference on Thursday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that although there are indications that the monkeypox outbreak was slowing in Europe, which at one time accounted for 90 percent of laboratory-confirmed cases globally, the spread of the virus now causes concerns in other regions. Particularly in Latin America, the lack of information or public health measures are combining with a lack of access to vaccines to fan the flames of the outbreak,” said Tedros. We recommend reading: At the end of July, Tedros declared the spread of monkeypox to dozens of countries a global emergency, despite the lack of consensus of its expert committee. According to Africa’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the continent recorded 219 new cases last week, an increase of 54 percent. Most occurred in Nigeria and Congo, the agency said. British health officials said last week there were “indications” that the outbreak in the country was losing steam. Last month, britain’s Health Security Agency lowered the alert level for the outbreak in the country. “With the devil nobody gets involved,” a woman enrolls her boyfriend for military service as an infidel.
