Jaime Guzmán Foundation values conviction of former frentista Escobar Poblete and UDI indicates: “I hope they have him deprived of liberty for the rest of his life”

The Jaime Guzmán Foundation (FJG) and the UDI valued the conviction of former member of the Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front (FPMR) Raúl Escobar Poblete, alias Comandante Emilio, as the author of the terrorist murder of the senator and founder of the UDI, Jaime Guzmán, an illicit act perpetrated on April 1, 1991 in the commune of Ñuñoa, Metropolitan region.
Recall that the visiting minister Guillermo de la Barra sentenced Escobar Poblete on Monday to 18 years in prison for the crime. The magistrate also established that once the sentence is final and enforceable, Escobar Poblete will be returned to Mexico. This, with the aim of continuing to serve the 60-year sentence for the aggravated kidnapping of Nancy Michel Kendall.

In a statement, the FJG said it appreciates the “permanent effort of our judicial system to do justice for Senator Jaime Guzmán and for all his family and friends.”
They also lamented “Escobar Poblete’s lack of regret in pleading ‘not guilty’, as his words reflect that his rejection of democracy and his hatred of those who think differently remain intact.”
In turn, they pointed to an “international support network for the murderers of Jaime Guzmán who still remain in impunity, which is exemplified in the refuge that Galvarino Apablaza and Ricardo Palma have found in Argentina and France respectively.”

UDI: “I hope they have him deprived of liberty for the rest of his life”
The UDI also reacted to the conviction against the ex-frentista. “Justice takes time but it comes. I believe it is important to value the efforts that were made in international coordination, particularly with Mexico to achieve this justice,” said the senator and president of the collectivity, Javier Macaya.

“Obviously there is coordination there regarding the fulfillment of serious crimes that he also committed in Mexico, very serious crimes that he committed in Chile, which hopefully will have him deprived of liberty for the rest of his life,” added the UDI helmsman.
“It seems to us that a person who validated violence as a method of achieving political objectives, both in Chile and in Mexico, has to serve a sentence (…) We expect Raul Escobar to be in prison for the rest of his life,” the senator added.
