Senate discusses reform again to expand Army presence

The full Senate discusses this Tuesday, again, the reform that seeks to extend from 2024 to 2028 the presence of the Armed Forces in public security tasks.
The reform has already been approved in the Chamber of Deputies, where it obtained the votes of Morena and its allies and practically the entire PRI caucus.
However, in the Senate so far it has not garnered enough support to move forward.

On September 21, although the opinion had been approved in committees, the reform was withdrawn from the plenary at the request of Morena, so that changes could be negotiated that would reach consensus.

Yesterday, after some agreements, committees approved a new opinion that incorporates some proposals of the opposition. For example, having the federal government deliver semi-annual reports on the work of soldiers and sailors or forming a bicameral commission to monitor them.

But even so, the reform still does not reach the qualified majority that it requires in the plenary to be approved. Ricardo Monreal, leader of Morena in the Senate, said yesterday that he would continue to seek support.
