Guerrero is the 31st state to recognize marriage equality

The Congress of Guerrero approved reforms to the Civil Code to recognize equal marriage in the state.
With 38 votes in favor, 6 against and two abstentions, the modifications of the Civil Code, the Civil Procedure Code and the Civil Registry Law were endorsed, not only for equal marriage, but also to recognize the “concubinage of all persons over 18 years of age, without any discrimination”.
With this vote, Guerrero becomes the 31st entity in the country to reform the Civil Code that allows same-sex marriage.

However, LGBT+ groups have pointed out that there is still a need to modify laws in the states of Chihuahua and Guanajuato that allow it only by decree, as well as in Aguascalientes, Chiapas and Nuevo León that do so by court order.

In 2015, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) opened the door for same-sex marriages to be celebrated throughout Mexico, despite the fact that local laws do not consider it legal.
In June 2022, Morena deputies presented to the Congress of Guerrero the initiative to legalize equal marriage, which represented an advance for groups in the state.
“That equal marriage is approved would be the payment of a historic debt to many members of the LGBT community who have been killed and who have died, which sets precedents so that we can continue to move forward with the other laws,” said Ricardo Locia, anthropologist, activist for the rights of the LGBTI+ population and member of the LGBTI+ Orgullo Guerrero Collective.
Since 2017, these groups count hate crimes in the state.
