Sisters die when they fall into a strainer
On Thursday night, Sofia and Esmeralda, two sisters aged 16 and 23, drowned on Thursday night, after falling into a drainage drain without a lid, on Viaducto Río Consulado Avenue, in the Iztacalco mayor’s office.

The young women were walking through the area of the Palacio de los Deportes to a concert, when they fell into a strainer; Their father, who accompanied them, as well as passers-by tried to help them out, but could not save them.
“If I had known, I won’t buy the ticket”: mother
One of the young women fell into the hole, at least three meters deep, and hit her head, according to the first versions of the facts.
According to El Pais, the other sister tried to help her, but the lack of oxygen from the gases inside the sewer and the sewage from the bottom killed them.
“If I knew, I won’t buy them the ticket… They are my two daughters, the only ones I have,” her mother said upon arriving at the scene.
The group Zoé, to whom the sisters would come to listen, performed a tribute for the young women in their second concert.
Before starting the show, they asked for a moment of silence, sent their condolences to the family, demanded that the authorities take charge of the accident and dedicated the concert to Sofia and Esmeralda.

The mayor’s office of Iztacalco, where the incident occurred, warned that the theft of drains is constant and that, even, the mayor’s office now changes them for plastic ones to prevent their theft.
He indicated that the businesses of the mayor’s office that buy iron will be reviewed and in case strainers and public real estate are found, judicial measures will be taken because “it is a strong crime, which costs lives, to remove a drain and go to sell it.”
According to the head of government, an average of eight manhole covers and other accessories are replaced daily, which occur mainly due to theft.
