AMLO disqualifies march for the INE

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) described as a “political striptease” the march in defense of the National Electoral Institute (INE).
During the morning press conference, the president said that “those who demonstrated yesterday, deep down, did so against the transformation that is taking place in the country.”
“They did it in favor of the privileges they had before the government I represent, they did it in favor of corruption, in favor of racism, classism, discrimination, that is the background. Because there is no way that Roberto Madrazo, Elba Esther Gordillo and Vicente Fox are democrats,” he said.

According to the president, “yesterday’s march was like a political, public strip of conservatism in Mexico,” in addition, he added that “not many people participated and that is why they did not reach the Zócalo of the CDMX.”
“They would not have filled even half of the Zocalo, yesterday they marched I think about 50 or 60 thousand and the plate is filled with 125 thousand. Hopefully they will follow him, that they will propose to fill the Zocalo because struggles, even when they are pettiness, require perseverance,” he said.

“The people must elect the counselors and magistrates”: AMLO
López Obrador stressed that the electoral reform he promotes “is not to affect the INE but to have greater democracy in the country.”
“What is the electoral reform initiative? it is to have a reliable INE and a Tribunal, not as it is now at the service of conservatism because they are capable, they have already done, of making frauds supported by corrupt and undemocratic electoral magistrates and counselors, “he said.
According to the president, the electoral reform will achieve “establishing in Mexico an authentic democracy since what is sought is that counselors and magistrates are chosen by the people.”
During the presentation of the conference, the president showed a slide with the names of some of the people who attended the march in defense of the INE such as Sandra Cuevas, Javier Lozano, Santiago Creel and Mauricio Tabe, among others.
López Obrador stressed that in his government “the right to dissent has to be guaranteed,” however, he pointed out that “in yesterday’s mobilization, most of the people did not participate.”

López Obrador also declared that “there is more polarization in the United States than in Mexico since, according to polls, 70% support the transformation and 27% are against.”
“Imagine the joy of holding hands with supposed adversaries walking together because, in their view, democracy is at risk. It is a unique show, it is charge per event, “he concluded.
