Chile, other countries denounce Israel’s reprisals against Palestine after UN vote

Some 40 countries — including Chile — on Monday backed a statement denouncing Israel’s reprisals against Palestine in response to the UN General Assembly’s passage of a resolution asking the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for an “advisory opinion” on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.
The text, distributed by Palestinian sources, expresses “deep concern over the decision of the Government of Israel to impose punitive measures” by that document, which was adopted by the member states of the United Nations at the end of December with 87 votes in favor, 26 against and 53 abstentions.
Among the signatories of the declaration – made public on Monday – are Chile, Latin American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Mexico; Spain and numerous European nations, and states from other continents such as Japan, Algeria and New Zealand.
The UN Secretary-General, asked about it, also said Monday through a spokeswoman that there should be no retaliatory measures against Palestine over the ICJ issue.
According to Israeli media, among the actions taken by Israel in response to the text of the UN Assembly is the freezing of certain funds that would correspond to Palestinians.
The initiative approved in December by the General Assembly at the proposal of the Palestinian government asked the highest court of the United Nations to rule on the conflict in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.
It also investigates Israeli measures aimed at altering the demographic composition and status of Jerusalem, and demands that Israel not apply “discriminatory” laws and measures.
The Palestinian authorities celebrated its adoption as a major diplomatic victory, while the Israeli government immediately rejected it.
