A former Chelsea footballer was rescued alive from the rubble after the earthquake in Turkey

After 3,800 deaths were confirmed and more than 13,000 injured by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria, Christian Atsu, a 31-year-old Ghanaian footballer who wore the shirts of Chelsea, Porto, Malaga and Newcastle, among others, was found alive under the rubble. Although at first there was uncertainty about their location and that of three of their companions, the rescue teams saved them and they had to be treated. As it transpired they were trapped under the rubble and after hard work, the professionals freed them. The footballer suffered injuries to several parts of the body, with seriousness in his right foot. In addition, he had breathing difficulties and was forced to remain in hospital. While the other three players are also alive: Onur Ergun and Burak Oksuz were located by rescuers, and Kerim Alici managed to get out on his own. So far no deaths of Argentines have been confirmed, and Lucas Biglia and Mauro Icardi, Turkish soccer players, sent different messages of support. The striker posted a photo on his Instagram account with the mourning tape and the phrase “may he get better soon.” Biglia, for his part, shared his club’s official statement: “We wish God’s mercy to our citizens who lost their lives in the earthquake that occurred in Kahramanmara and was felt in many cities, and we wish a speedy recovery to our injured citizens.”
