“Love for two wheels,” was the title of a video shared by officials of the Carabineros de Antofagasta on the social network TikTok, while driving institutional motorcycles in an “unallowed” manner. After the dissemination of the images, based on the Traffic Law, administrative processes were initiated within the uniformed police “to correct this behavior.”
The situation becomes complex, while the police are responsible for ensuring compliance with the No Chat Law, which prohibits tampering with any electronic device while driving a vehicle (or even when stopped at a red light or stop sign).

It is important to mention that the video does not show the faces of the officials. In addition, the carabinero identified on TikTok as @josseph89 subsequently deleted the recording. Faced with this situation involving officials who are under her supervision, the Regional Presidential Delegate of Antofagasta, Karen Behrens Navarrete, lamented the situation, and stressed that “no one is above the law.”
“Respect for the situation spread by social networks, which involves a Carabineros officer while driving his institutional motorcycle is an unfortunate fact, because it is precisely the carabineros and carabineras who must show by example an appropriate conduct respecting traffic regulations,” the presidential delegate began pointing out to El Mostrador.
And he added: “Yesterday we discussed this situation and, there is no person who is above the law, and the corresponding sanctions must be applied according to the investigation carried out by the institution against conduct that is personal and that does not involve all the personnel of Carabineros.”
But the motorcycle episode was not the only controversial episode starring police in Antofagasta. Although they say it was an “isolated situation”, during this day, they arrested the driver of an ambulance for being poorly parked, in the middle of an emergency (a motorist had suffered an accident at the intersection of Balmaceda and Baquedano streets).

Delegate Behrens recounted what happened: “During an emergency procedure there was a situation involving a SAMU driver who was approached by Carabineros personnel. In the first instance, we received as a delegation the report of the procedure, which indicated that the driver did not obey an instruction by the uniformed police, and once the emergency was attended, the respective procedure was carried out. Subsequently, once this process was completed, both headquarters were informed to clarify and apply the corresponding corrective measures for both institutions, both in compliance with the law and in operation during an emergency, and the coordinated work between the various institutions.
Next, the authority designated by President Gabriel Boric said that, as a delegation, they are aware of any corresponding administrative management, so they immediately requested to reinforce the prevention measures of both SAMU personnel and the adjustment to compliance with the law for Carabineros.
It is worth mentioning that Carabineros also initiated an administrative investigation into the arrest of the ambulance driver.
