Incorporation to the right of Ximena Rincón and Matías Walker leaves the opposition with control of the Senate

The senators of the party in formation Democratic Party, Matías Walker and Ximena Rincón, announced their administrative incorporation to the committee of the Evópoli bench, thus joining the opposition bench to the Government of President Gabriel Boric.
The information was delivered by Senator Rincón herself, when she asked for the floor in the Senate Chamber to communicate the determination, assuring that they have no space “in the decisions of the Corporation.”
“I want to inform the Bureau that a job is going to be entered, by which, as parliamentarians who today do not have space in the decisions of the Corporation, nor in the infrastructure, we are going to reach an agreement accepting an offer from the Evópoli bench to integrate it administratively,” said the former Christian Democrat.
The fact radically changes the panorama of the composition of the Senate, since now it is the opposition that happens to have 27 of 50 possible votes, so they become a majority in the decisive instances within the Corporation.
The foregoing should not be overlooked, especially considering that a series of important discussions are being prepared in Congress, among them, measures related to the fight against crime, the sixth withdrawal from pension funds or, without going any further, the tax reform of the Executive.
It should be remembered that on February 14, the Superior Court of Christian Democracy (DC) resolved the official expulsion from the store of parliamentarians Matías Walker and Ximena Rincón, after having campaigned in favor of rejection, a position contrary to that adopted by the collectivity in its National Board.
This step aside from the ruling party that Ximena Rincón gives occurs after her controversial intervention regarding the tax reform project last Wednesday, when the senator entered the Chamber of Representatives to instruct former deputies of the Christian Democratic Party not to vote in favor of the idea of legislating said initiative. This generated indignation in the ruling party, which saw one of the most relevant and expected bills of this Government fall, because it would provide resources for key reforms such as pensions and help finance public policies such as nurseries, reduction of waiting lists, increase in the Universal Guaranteed Pension, among others.
Deputy Gonzalo Winter was very hard about the role of Democrats and particularly Ximena Rincón: “I was surprised that the Democratic caucus (ex-DC) did not vote in favor. I was surprised by the public position they take saying that they understand the need for a new tax pact in Chile, that they understand the need for redistribution and to raise the Universal Guaranteed Pension (PGU). If that was true, the Democratic caucus could have asked for a separate vote on everything they did not like or presented indications, asked for a separate vote, but none of that happened in the Finance Committee,” he told El Mostrador after the idea of legislating the tax reform was rejected.
