March’s CPI notes monthly variation of 1.1%, influenced by education, and inflation reaches 11.1% year-on-year

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) announced on Thursday morning the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of March 2023, which recorded a monthly variation of 1.1% – accumulating an increase of 1.8% to the third month of the year – and an increase of 11.1% to 12 months.
According to the INE, nine of the 12 divisions that make up the CPI basket contributed positive incidences in the monthly variation of the index and three had a negative impact.
Among the divisions with increases in their prices, education (10.8%), which contributed 0.659 percentage points (pp.), and recreation and culture (2.2%), with 0.144 pp.
Among the divisions with decreases in their prices, transport stood out (-0.7%), with -0.097 percentage points.
Divisions
Education
Education recorded monthly increases in its five classes. The most important was higher education (tertiary) (12.2%) which accounted for 0.397pp., while pre-school education and basic (primary) education (12.0%) contributed 0.187pp.
Of the 11 products that make up the division, 10 presented increases in their prices, being the most relevant university education service (13.2%), with an incidence of 0.304pp., followed by teaching service in professional institute (12.6%), with 0.075pp. The remaining products with positive incidences accumulated 0.282pp.
Recreation and culture
Recreation and Culture posted monthly increases in nine of its 16 classes. The most important was tourist packages (6.4%) which contributed 0.080pp., followed by recreation and sports services (3.9%), with 0.040pp.
Of the 37 products that make up the division, 17 recorded increases in their prices, highlighting tourist package (6.4%), with an incidence of 0.080pp., followed by gyms (3.7%), with 0.018pp. The remaining products with positive contributions accumulated 0.054pp.
Transport
Transport recorded monthly declines in four of its ten classes. The most important was passenger transport on urban roads and highways (-3.7%) which contributed -0.095pp., followed by motor vehicles (-1.9%), with -0.064pp.
Of the 24 products that make up the division, nine recorded decreases in their prices, highlighting intercity bus transport service (-15.7%), with an incidence of -0.121pp., and new car (-2.0%), with -0.062pp. The remaining products with negative contributions accumulated -0.032pp.
