Former President Piñera ends his statement before prosecutor Chong for crimes against humanity

In the early hours of this Thursday, the former president of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera, finished his statement before the head of the North Central Prosecutor’s Office for High Complexity Crimes, Ximena Chong, for the cause in which he is charged with responsibility after multiple complaints of crimes against humanity during the social outbreak in 2019, in his role as the highest authority in the country.
This was the second instance in which Piñera answered the questions of the persecutor, after a first day of more than ten hours that began this Tuesday and culminated in the early hours of the next day. Chong confirmed that after the two statements the diligence is completed.

According to the prosecutor, the former president maintained the willingness to answer all the questions raised, and on the second occasion some corrections were made, after Piñera reviewed what he exposed the day before. In addition, some questions were asked: however, outside of that, according to Chong, “there were no great news.”
As for the causes under investigation, Chong said that “all the questions that were asked were answered. We are investigating, on the one hand, crimes against humanity. On the other hand, crimes that point to the homicidal responsibility of the commanders of Carabineros”.
After the end of the meeting that took place in the offices of the former head of state, in the commune of Vitacura, the lawyer of former President Piñera, Samuel Donoso, pointed out that “it was basically clarifying, specifying some points, doing it as completely as possible, that takes time. It was nothing more than that. In addition, the President testified in two cases, not in one, and at the same time.”
Likewise, Donoso explained that because in the instance two causes were treated, “that implied a large volume of questions from a period of national history that was very complex, such as the period of social outbreak.”
In the same vein, the defender pointed out that in the context of those months, the Piñera Government maintained an immovable policy: “to all with whom it related in the public function, (they) demanded that double compliance. Compliance with the control of public order, and the fulfillment, at the same time and at the same time, unrestricted compliance with respect for human rights”.
