Peru: Former President Toledo arrived in the country

The former president of Peru, Alejandro Toledo, who governed from 2001 to 2006, arrived this Sunday in his native country, where he will be tried for alleged corruption crimes related to the Brazilian company Odebrecht.After surrendering to US authorities last Friday to be extradited, Toledo finally arrived at the Jorge Chávez airport in Lima. In Peru, the former president will be tried for the alleged crime of corruption involving the delivery of 35 million dollars in bribes by the Odebrecht company to win the fight for the construction of the Interoceanic Route South.According to local media, the Prosecutor’s Office requested a sentence of 20 years in prison for the alleged acts of corruption committed during his management. In July 2019, the former president was arrested in the United States after Peru requested extradition but, after paying bail, he left a year later and settled in California. However, after this new arrest, Toledo had to return to the country and will become the third former president imprisoned, along with Alberto Fujimori and Pedro Castillo, who tried to dissolve Congress at the end of last year.
