Morelia, Michoacán.- Women should enjoy the right to work fully, it is necessary to legislate for the right to have a dignified menstruation, said Oscar Escobar Ledesma, when presenting a reform to the Law of Workers in the Services of the State.
The citizen legislator pointed out that about 50 percent of women have presented primary or secondary dysmenorrhea at some point in their lives, so it will be an advance in the rights of Michoacanas who can request paid leave for up to 8 hours a month.
“The purpose of this initiative is to establish the possibility of leave for those women and menstruating people who are unable to carry out their workday because of physical discomfort that may occur during their menstrual period. The right to have a dignified menstruation is also a right to joy.”
Escobar Ledesma said that this initiative also contemplates that workplaces provide their workers with safe and sustainable menstrual hygiene products.
“Among the many achievements that women have made throughout their feminist struggle is to challenge the stigmatization of the menstrual period to defend women’s well-being, health, dignity and overall human rights. With this initiative we are contributing to the creation of more equitable and inclusive labor rights every day.”
He said that as a legislator of Movimiento Ciudadano he assumed the commitment to expand women’s rights, ranging from the area of health, to labor.
