16 prisoners escaped from a police station after filing roof bars

Sixteen prisoners managed to escape from the 24th police station in Granadero Baigorria, a city neighboring Rosario, during the afternoon of last Saturday. The escape was carried out after a plan that involved climbing with sheets to the roof of the courtyard, filing the bars and cutting a fabric that kept them confined. Despite the authorities’ efforts, seven of the fugitives remain at large. The police station, with a nominal capacity to hold 18 inmates, was holding 48 people at the time of the escape, a situation that police investigators said is unfortunately common in prisons and police stations in the region. The details of the escape suggest planning on the part of the inmates. The bars filed on the roof of the courtyard suggest that this was not an impulsive act performed in a matter of minutes. Given this evidence, the Judicial Division of the Police announced the opening of an administrative investigation to determine how these events were carried out and if there was any complicity on the part of police personnel in the escape of the detainees. Among the fugitives are individuals facing felony charges. Lautaro Leonardo Paiva, arrested for selling drugs, and Ezequiel Darío Aquino, accused of drug dealing and unlawful possession of a weapon of war, are just two examples of those who are now out of bars. One of the fugitives, Oscar Rolón, arrested for gender-based violence, had already been charged with simple threats and aggravated injuries at the Criminal Justice Center. Luis Rodriguez, arrested for attempted robbery, was also among the escapees. However, the most worrisome case falls on Roman Isaias Aguirre, who faces charges of qualified robbery for the use of a firearm, concealment and illegal possession of a firearm since last May. Despite the seriousness of the escape, authorities managed to recapture seven of the fugitives, including individuals charged with attempted robbery, extortion, damage, trespassing, and unlawful possession of weapons. Road safety police also arrested Luciano Acosta, who had been arrested for an attempted robbery last June, in the vicinity of the escape area.
