Alert for increase in cases of respiratory syncytial virus

Mexico. – The Ministry of Health reports an increase in the circulation of respiratory viruses in Mexico in the 2023-2024 winter season, in which respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) stands out.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common viral illness that causes mild cold-like symptoms, but it can lead to serious lung infections in infants, older adults, and people with serious medical problems.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) indicates that RSV and influenza activity has shown a slight increase in North America, up to Epidemiological Week 43.
PAHO identified 4,063 cases of RSV with a positivity of 1.1 percent in several countries in the Americas, such as Argentina, Chile, the United States and Colombia, while the highest positivity rates have been recorded in Grenada, El Salvador, Uruguay and Guatemala.
In Mexico, there has been an increase in cases of respiratory viruses, with a predominance of RSV, and the most affected age groups are children from one to four years old, under one year old, and children from 5 to 9 years old.
The State of Mexico and Mexico City reported the highest number of confirmed cases and hospitalizations.
