Riestra beat Maipú 1-0 and was promoted to the First Division

In a definition overshadowed by controversial refereeing rulings, Deportivo Riestra beat Deportivo Maipú 1-0 with a goal by Gustavo Fernández and promoted for the first time in its history to the First Division. The previous match was marked by incidents between the police and the Riestra fans, the match started a few minutes later than agreed. Seconds before kick-off, the starting eleven of the Pompeii team entered the field of play as a block with part of the coaching staff with the captain, Milton Céliz, at the head haranguing the team. The first half, dominated by the friction and fouls that characterize the final stages of promotion, had a better performance from Riestra, who was not effective in defining and had to wait until the second half to let off steam with the shout of goal. In the 15th minute of the second half, after a free kick that Walter Acuña took in the center of the box, Gustavo Fernandez crossed the ball with a header and scored the 1-0 that put Marchesi’s team ahead. Then, Riestra retreated and left Fernandez alone as an attacker with five defenders and a clear intention to defend the result. With 10 minutes to go before the end of the match, Eric Tovo hit Gonzalo Klusener in the face with his elbow and, to the surprise of those present, referee Darío Herrera decided not to show a card and continue the game. Despite Maipú’s repeated attempts to tie the match, Modolo’s team kept the result on the scoreboard by dint of a relentless defense and was left with the reduced for promotion to the top flight. Riestra’s epic in Argentine football is unclassifiable, with more than 70 years playing between the C and D since its inception. The club had a turning point in 2012, with the arrival of a new sponsor and the advice of Diego Armando Maradona. Then in the D, the team from Pompeii achieved a year later the historic return to the C, and in the following season marked a unique milestone in Argentine football: a double promotion in the same year. Subsequently, in 2016, the club was promoted to the Primera B Nacional and, although relegated in the 2017/2018 season, it managed to return the following year. Riestra remained there until this afternoon they achieved the historic promotion to the First Division with a 1-0 win against Maipú.
