Colombia: Landslide kills 33

There would be 33 people dead and 19 injured after a landslide that occurred on Friday in the northwest of Colombia and that mainly affected an indigenous community that lives in the area. Meanwhile, authorities continue to work on the search for an unknown number of missing people. An unexpected and powerful storm was the one that unleashed the landslide on a route that connects the cities of Quibdó and Medellín, located in Carmen de Atrato, in the jungle department of Chocó. Although authorities initially reported 17 fatalities, the number progressively increased as discoveries were made under the rubble. In addition, images shared on social networks captured the precise moment when a mountain broke off, burying several vehicles that were traveling on the road, which was completely flooded. Through her social networks, Vice President Francia Márquez said: “I deeply regret the death of 33 people in this tragedy, mostly children, according to preliminary reports from the territory. All our solidarity with the department of Chocó and the families of the victims.”
