“I don’t agree that there is going to be democratic backsliding”: AMLO – MonitorExpresso.com

Mexico. – Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of the republic, denied in the “morning” press conference on Tuesday, March 5, that there is any risk of democratic backsliding due to the climate of violence, as announced by the Mexican Bishops’ Conference (CEM). “I agree that ‘for the good of all, democracy first’ because it is ‘for the good of all, the people first’, democracy is the people. And on the other hand, although I do not agree that there is going to be democratic backsliding, I respect that point of view. I don’t agree, but I respect that. And he has every right to demonstrate.” In this sense, the federal president pointed out from the National Palace that the Mexican people live in a free country, where no one’s right to express themselves, demonstrate, meet or associate is censored, he also expressed that there is a very good relationship with the Catholic Church and will not enter into controversy because that could be a strategy of publicists. “We have a very good relationship with the Catholic Church and with all the churches and we are not going to polemicize because that could also be a strategy of the publicists: let’s see, confrontation. No, it’s love and peace. We are free.” López Obrador argued that the conditions the country is going through are not the best and that work has to be done to change those dilemmas. “He’s right about that, because you can’t after centuries of oppression, injustices, privileges, corruption, you can’t change that reality overnight. We are starting a new life in democracy.”
