Remembrance Day: Milei government does not plan events for March 24

In a complex context, the Government headed by Javier Milei has confirmed that the holiday next Sunday, March 24, will remain on the official calendar. However, it is not planned that any official act or activity will be held to honor the victims of the so-called state terrorism.According to Noticias Argentinas, for the libertarian administration, this date represents a particular challenge, since it questions the official history and disagrees with the figure of 30,000 disappeared detainees. In addition, they seek to recognize those who lost their lives at the hands of the armed groups of the time. Although there was speculation about the possibility of moving the holiday to Friday or Monday to form a long weekend, the government has decided to keep the original date, considering it “immovable” in the annual national calendar. From the libertarian administration, although it recognizes what happened during the dictatorship, it is emphasized that this claim for “the complete history” does not imply in any way an endorsement of the dictatorship or its actions. That is why the final decision on whether there will be any kind of commemoration or activity by the government will be left in the hands of President Milei and his team. The holiday of March 24 was instituted in 2002 by National Law 25,633, in commemoration of those who were victims of the process initiated on that date in 1976. However, President Milei’s entourage takes a critical look at the official history and the events narrated.
