CONICET demands the reinstatement of employees: “Workers are essential”

The board of directors of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) called for the reinstatement of the dismissed agents through a harsh statement published on Wednesday against the National Government. CONICET has 1,600 administrative and technical employees who are essential for the normal functioning of the Research Careers, with 12,150 members; Support Staff, 3,050; and 10,900 people who, with doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships, are trained in scientific and technological research tasks, which constitute the future of national science and the federal development of the country,” the text said. Along these lines, he continued: “These new layoffs are in addition to those already formalized last January. Therefore, in addition to the current repudiation, we ask that all the dismissed agents be reinstated since their dismissal was not due to defects in their hiring, nor to the irrelevance of the tasks they performed.” In addition, they described the way in which the Executive proceeded as “informal and injudicious as injudicative”: “The verbal receipt of an order to reduce the staff based on an arbitrary percentage of it is the antithesis of a decision based on performance evaluations or criteria of reasonableness and relevance of the tasks performed. It also lacks the minimum formality required by a public body for its governance.” A few days after taking office, President Javier Milei appointed Argentina’s cloning expert, Daniel Salamone. He is a veterinarian with a PhD in Veterinary Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires, he has a long history in the scientific field.
