Pope Francis called for redoubling efforts to end wars

Pope Francis on Wednesday made a new appeal for peace through negotiation, while deploring the bloody conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.The pope once again limited his public interventions at his weekly audience in St. Peter’s Square due to persistent health problems. We must never forget that war is always a defeat, we cannot continue in war, we must make every effort to mediate, to negotiate the end of the war, let us pray for it,” Francis said in brief words at the end of the audience, in which he cited the “martyred” Ukraine and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Francis, 87, who has mobility problems and has been suffering from colds and bronchitis in recent weeks, once again avoided reading most of the texts he had prepared for the audience. He again delegated the task to an aide and told the faithful that he was still forced to limit his public interventions. Earlier this month, the Holy Father caused controversy by suggesting in an interview with Swiss broadcaster RSI that Ukraine should “show the courage to raise the white flag” and engage in talks with Russia. His deputy, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, later clarified that Russia should first stop its aggression.
