Brazil: Tragic storm leaves 13 dead

After the floods and climatic disasters left by the storm throughout Argentina, the storms moved to the southeast of Brazil, where they caused the death of 13 people in different accidents, and the authorities deployed an operation this Saturday to deal with the critical situation. Rivers overflowing with water between heavy rains and a sky covered by clouds created an unusual scenario in Rio de Janeiro, where temperatures dropped and structures gave way to the storm. According to information provided by the government of Rio de Janeiro, four people lost their lives in the collapse of a house located in the city of Petrópolis, 70 kilometers from the state capital. To deal with the situation, the government decided to form an Emergency Committee, which announced that it rescued 90 people, who were transferred to public schools, used as temporary shelters. The preventive measures of the government, which detected an administrative holiday for last Friday to avoid fatalities, were not enough in the face of the fierce storm, for which the alert is still in force in the area. In the last 24 hours, according to Brazilian media reports, it rained 270 millimeters, a record figure for the region. The tragic phenomenon came days after extreme temperatures that reached 62.3° of wind chill in specific areas of Rio de Janeiro, a record number in the territory.
