The Government of Milei congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum, President-elect of Mexico

The government of Javier Milei congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum, president-elect of Mexico in Sunday’s elections, on Monday, despite the conflict with outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. In a brief statement, the Argentine Foreign Ministry said: “The government of the Argentine Republic salutes the People and the Government of Mexico for the election day held this Sunday, June 2, while extending his congratulations to President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum.” In addition, he highlighted the importance of diplomatic relations between the two countries on the 135th anniversary of their establishment. Sheinbaum, the first woman in history to govern Mexico, won Sunday’s presidential election by a wide margin of nearly 30 points over opposition candidate Xochitl Galvez. Unlike the Foreign Ministry, neither President Milei nor any member of his cabinet congratulated her. On the other hand, Cristina Kirchner pointed out that “we salute from Argentina, our country, the Mexican people for the historic democratic day they starred in” and, at the same time, Alberto Fernández published a video with the president-elect and assured that “Latin America celebrates” her election. Meanwhile, outgoing incumbent Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador vowed “not to impose anything” on his successor, Claudia Sheinbaum, and said he will retire from politics after the Oct. 1 inauguration. “I don’t want to impose anything and I feel very satisfied,” Lopez said.
