President Andrés Manuel López Obrador minimized the fact that former Pemex director Emilio Lozoya Austin, currently a fugitive, has as defenders the same lawyers who are legal guardians of the prosecutor Alejandro Gertz Manero.

During his morning conference, the representative said he trusted the prosecutor, who, he said, “is a righteous man and is not going to protect vested interest groups.”
In questioning whether the prosecutor should renounce his relationship with Emilio Lozoya’s lawyer, Javier Coello Trejo and his team, to avoid a possible conflict of interest, López Obrador said that he will not issue recommendations because the Public Prosecutor’s Office is an autonomous entity.
“He could decide (stop having a relationship with Lozoya’s lawyer), I would not recommend, I do not fit, because it is an autonomous institution and has to be respected. I have no need to make a recommendation in this regard. Besides, I don’t think it’s illegal,” he replied.

Although he acknowledged that it may be an “immoral” act, he insisted that Gertz Manero has a matter of deciding whether to keep his legal proxy.
Gertz Manero placed his trust in lawyers Javier Coello Trejo and his son Javier Coello Zuarth since 2015 by giving them ample power to file a criminal complaint in his name and investigate the deterioration of health and subsequent death of his brother Federico, who died at the age of 82.
