translated from Spanish: #NoSonMuebles: they seek that animals be considered in the new Constitution

As part of the announcement of a new Constitution for the country, different groups have organized to send the petitions of the citizenry. That’s why Fundación Vegetarianos Hoy, with the support of more than 160,000 people, believes that it should regard animals as feeling beings, just as other Constitutions around the world have done.
“It is pressing for Chile’s new fundamental charter to regard animals as subjects of rights and follow international guidelines, such as the 2007 Lisbon Treaty, in which the European Union stipulates that animals are sintient beings,” explains Ignacia Uribe, managing director and founder of Vegetarians Hoy.
He adds: “Today, countries like Austria, Germany, Switzerland and France already have animals considered within their legal margins, so we must catch up with this responsibility.”
Currently, the 1980 Constitution does not mention animals, so their fundamental rights do not exist, and the laws that protect them are always subject to other constitutional rights that are above those bodies of law, such as property law.
Since 2015, the campaign has #NoSonMuebles seeks to include them in the Constitution as rights holders with their own interests. Already 100 thousand signatures were handed over in La Moneda, and in the last presidential election slamine both candidates pledged to change the legal status of the animals through the campaign.
