translated from Spanish: Violent theft at CDMX ATMs doubled in 2019

After leaving Wednesday from a bank branch from where he withdrew 45,000 pesos in cash, the food manager at The Tecnológico de Monterrey University, at the Santa Fe campus in Mexico City, was assaulted by two armed men who shot him in the leg and went on the run with the loot, until hours later they were arrested by the capital police.
Events like this are certainly not novel in the city; in fact, they’ve been a constant for decades. However, official statistics warn that, so far as Claudia Sheinbaum’s new administration, there was an outstanding increase in assaults coming out of a bank teller or branch.
According to figures presented on Wednesday by the Digital Agency for Public Innovation in its most recent report, between January and October of this year 586 research folders for assaults with violence at ATMs are counted; that is, just over 2 heists a day.
This figure assumes that between January and October this year 303 more ATM rounds have been committed than in the same period of 2018; 100% rise.
The increase in at-AtMs in the City is also appreciated if it is measured in rate per 100 thousand inhabitants: in 2018, the rate was 3.24 ATM robberies per 100 thousand inhabitants, while this year it doubled: 6.68 events per 100 thousand people.
As for the December 2018 comparison, the first month of the new capital administration, with October this year, it shows a slight increase of 10%: it went from 50 complaints when Claudia Sheinbaum arrived at 55 in October.
Statistics published by the Digital Agency show that in the last two months the curve of evolution of cashier’s assaults is declining, although the 55 reports in October are still far from the 28 that were recorded in July last year.
Fear of being the victim of an ATM assault is not unique to the inhabitants of Mexico City. In fact, in its most recent June poll this year on citizen security perception, the Inegi noted that 8 out of 10 Mexicans feel insecure when they take money out of an ATM located on public roads, and 6 out of 10 said the same thing when they are in a bank.
Violent taxi robberies are fired
Another crime that has experienced a noticeable increase in Mexico City is that of theft of passenger robbery on board taxi with violence.
According to official figures, there were 346 complaints of taxi assaults in the current Sheinbaum administration, up to 192 more than last year; 124% increase.
By rate, in 2018 this was 2.18 thefts of taxi passengers per 100 thousand inhabitants, and in 2019 it soared to more than double: 4.15 per 100 thousand inhabitants.
Another crime that was triggered is that of robbery by carrier with and without violence: in the present administration, there are 102 complaints of this wrongdoing; 61.9% more than last year.
While the violent room home robbery increased 48%: from 432 investigative folders for this crime in 2018, it was moved to 643 in this administration.
For all these crimes, including ATM assaults, the Digital Public Innovation Agency noted that during the last administration there was a “make-up” of the figures to report them downwards.
For example, in the case of ATM rounds, the Agency noted that 335 research folders were registered last year, when in fact there were 368, almost 10% more.
In another illicit act, that of sexual rapes, the Agency reported a under-registration of more than 90%: the previous capital government reported 729 folders for this crime in 2018, when in fact they amounted to a thousand 401.
On the other hand, official statistics show that in the government of Claudia Sheinbaum 8 crimes were reduced, among these several of high social impact and high incidence.
One of the high-impact crimes that go downside is the one of kidnapping, which was reduced by 33.8%: it went from 242 complaints in 2018, and a rate of 2.7 per 100 thousand inhabitants, to 160 cases so far in 2019, and a rate of 1.8 per 100 thousand.
The thefts on the Metro also reported a notable decline: it went from 3,893 complaints last year to 2,556 in 2019, a 34% decline.
While roadside robberies and non-violence also dropped 33.8%.
Did the homicides go down?
Recently, last Monday, the chief of business smug lyusesed at an event with municipal security secretaries that the killings also dropped in the city, as did other illegals such as the theft of vehicles with and without violence.
Specifically, the representative gave two facts.
One, if you compare the October 2018 data to October of this year, there is a reduction in murders of 12%.
And two, when it compares December 2018, when she entered government, with the last month of October this year, the reduction is even bigger: 34%.
“We are not satisfied with everything that has been done, but we are on the right track,” Sheinbaum stressed.
Both figures are true. However, the chief of capital did not say that the comparison of her 11 months of government with the same period of the previous year does not lead to an overall reduction in intentional homicides, but an increase.
According to data from the Capital Prosecutor’s Office, in the years of Sheinbaum government total 138 research folders for intentional homicide, 122 more than in the same period of 2018.
Therefore, The Hound, the fact-checking period exercise of Political Animal, called Sheinbaum’s saying debatable, because depending on the period under review it can be concluded that the homicides decreased or increased.
