The debate between ensuring security and reviving the economy is a “false dichotomy” and countries must remain vigilant even if they are about to ease the restrictions placed on combating the coronavirus pandemic, a World Health Organization (WHO) official said Thursday.
According to WHO Director for the Western Pacific Takeshi Kasai, the reopening of the economy should not accelerate and should be done with caution. The world must “create a new normal in which we don’t have to choose between health and way of life,” he added.
Countries must strengthen their health systems and take early detection, isolation and contact tracing measures, and ensure that they are ready for a large-scale community outbreak, Kasai said.
If there is an uptick in cases, governments should be prepared to re-adopt strict measures as the entire population is at risk until a vaccine is developed, he said.
