Guatemala City.- The Government of Guatemala announced on Thursday that the reopening of its air, land and sea borders will be from September 18th but with some obligations and limitations. According to the reform of the presidential provisions in force since July 26, in which the country was declared publicly calamity by the new coronavirus (COVID-19), each person entering or leaving Guatemala must comply with the measures of the Ministry of Health and the health protocols of the institutions that perform the immigration procedures at each border, port or airport.

The document published by the government of President Alejandro Giammattei also establishes restrictions and limitations of locomotion and confinement in the country. The document published in the Official Journal states that “the locomotion, circulation and transit of the inhabitants is restricted to any place in the Republic of Guatemala by land, air or sea (sea, lake, river) in relation to any type of travel or transfer of a recreational, social or family nature”. It adds that “duly authorized domestic (local) and international flights to or from runways registered with the Directorate-General for Civil Aeronautics” will be permitted. The communiqué further states that those who fail to comply with the new measures will be liable civilly and criminally for contagion to third parties.
