Five beaches in Mexico are not suitable for swimming as they go through bacterial levels, health authorities reported.

The health authorities laboratory analyzed more than 1,800 seawater samples from 265 beaches in Mexico’s top tourist destinations, of which 98.11% were classified as suitable. This means that they meet the safety levels of water enterocoques, established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The study measures the amount of Enterococcus faecalis bacteria in the water that comes from the faeces of humans and animals.
Diseases and symptoms that microorganisms in seawater can cause include gastroenteritis, salmonellosis, cholera, otitis, conjunctivitis, respiratory and skin diseases.
According to health authorities, fever, colds, gastroenteritis, diarrhea and digestive discomfort may also occur.
The Cofepris reported that seven beaches in the country could not be sampled by technical personnel, due to being closed for the measures taken against COVID-19.
In Veracruz: Playa Tumbao
In Campeche, in the municipality of Champoton: the beaches San Lorenzo, Bonita beach, Sombreron beach and Payuca beach.
In Ciudad del Carmen: Isla Arena beach in Kalkini and Puerto Real beach.
In a statement, the Cofepris clarified that the water quality measure does not mean an opening of the beaches or the safety therein to be visited, considering the declaration of Health Emergency by COVID-19.
