Mexico.- The Committees on Gender Equality and Justice of the Chamber of Deputies adopted an opinion seeking to reform various provisions of the Federal Criminal Code so that crimes that threaten women’s psychosexual freedom and development do not prescribe, that is, that they are not extinguished after the legal period established when the perpetuator is an official. To this end, it is proposed to interrupt the limitation periods if the active person holds or assumes a public office and to continue them once his term of office has ended.

The legislators noted the importance of combating impunity in crimes that undermine the intimidation of women protected by the protection afforded to public actors to take political or power office. Read more: Extend Senate presidency of Arturo Zaldívar at the SCJN; state coupWith 24 votes in favour today, Thursday, April 15, members of the Equality of Gender and Justice commissions endorsed the Opinion to the Initiative with Draft Decree reforming various provisions of the Federal Criminal Code and the General Law on Women’s Access to a Life Free of Violence , in relation to the limitation of offences against women’s psychosexual freedom and development.
In this regard, the opinion states that in cases of such offences as well as those provided for in the General Law to Prevent, Punish and Eradicate Crimes in Matters of Trafficking in Persons, the limitation period shall be deferred if the active individual is serving or assumes any of the positions determined in constitutional Article 110 , so the deadlines will continue once you are done with your duties. In this regard, Morena’s MEP, Wendy Briceño Zuloaga, stated that the purpose of the amendments is to prevent crimes against the sexuality and development of women from being terminated at the end of the times of the law when the perpetuator is an official, thereby ensuring that victims can obtain a longer time to act so that the subject can be punished. For this reason he urged combating acts of impunity when carried out by characters who shelter “under the cloak of protection of public office” denouncing that such a situation ends up hurting the lives of many female women.
