Mexico.- The Undersecretary for Health Prevention and Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, predicted that during the summer months, August and September, Mexico will achieve herd immunity against Covid-19.The above according to estimates of the rate expected to lead the national vaccination campaign against SARS-CoV-2 and taking into account the number of people who already have antibodies having previously spread the virus.

At the evening press conference from Palacio Nacional on Covid-19 figures in the Mexican republic, López-Gatell recalled that the concept of group immunity refers to “the situation where a population has enough people who have immunity”, that is, individuals who can no longer get sick or spread any disease. Read more: Over the age of 18 will receive the Covid-19 vaccine at the end of September: López-GatellIn this regard, the official stated that once they reach that point, all people are not required to have immunity, as it will only be sufficient for there to be sufficient number of immune subjects so that in daily life the likelihood that an infecting person will encounter one who can get the virus is “minimal”.
It noted that in the case of SARS-CoV-2, at least 75% of the population needed to have acquired immunity, either by vaccine or because they had contracted Covid-19. Faced with the outlook in Mexico, Hugo López-Gatell estimated that at approximately the time of August enough Mexicans will already have enough immune Mexicans with which, between August and September, the “critical point” of herd immunity will have already been achieved.
