The Government entered this Thursday afternoon the utmost urgency for the marriage equality project, as announced by President Sebastián Piñera the last Public Account of his second government. With the measure, the Senate will have 15 days to clear the bill.
The deadline will begin to be effective once it is reported to the Senate Chamber or the Constitution Committee, where the bill is located.
“I would like to inform V.E. that I have decided to make this urgent case for the dispatch of the bill that modifies various legal bodies to regulate, under equal conditions, the marriage of same-sex couples, corresponding to bulletin No. 11422-07,” states a document presented to Congress and signed by President Piñera.
“At the same time, and in use of the power conferred on me by article 74 of the Political Constitution of the Republic, I would like to point out the aforementioned urgency, for all its constitutional procedures – including those that it is responsible for fulfilling in the H. Chamber of Deputies – which, for the purposes of the provisions of articles 26 and following of Law No. 18.918 , Constitutional Organic of the National Congress, I call ‘SUMA’,” the text adds.
The extreme urgency of the project has caused division in Chile Vamos, with strong criticism issued from the UDI. “I think it speaks of a lack of political judgment, a lack of harmony with the coalition,” UDI President Javier Macaya said.
