translated from Spanish: Mayor of Maipú came to La Moneda to ask for more investment in security for the commune

“We have come to meet with the Ministry of the Interior about countless acts of violence and crime that the commune of Maipú is experiencing, particularly in the western sector in the towns of San Luis and San Carlos (…) We ask the minister that as a state we repair the debt of years of neglect, marginality, lack of resources and lack of investment,” Vodanovic said after the meeting. We come not only to ask for more cooperation in police presence, since in Maipú we have a shortage of police vehicles that is really alarming. We also ask to take responsibility for the causes of the problem. Along these lines, we have requested a stronger intervention in financial terms in the public space, so that the neighbors can see that the state is taking over,” he added. The mayor explained that, in the short term, Minister Delgado promised to deliver a police vehicle to the town of San Luis. Likewise, the government authority committed 50 million pesos from the Priority Neighborhoods program for the same town, which will be extended next year. The minister also expressed his willingness to strengthen the social intervention program. At the meeting, the mayor also requested other measures such as a greater “investigative focus” aimed at prosecuting acts of urban violence. In addition, he proposed that part of the more than 600 new police vehicles announced by President Sebastián Piñera go to the commune. Vodanovic also called for a greater offer of programs for vulnerable children and adolescents as part of community strengthening measures. The meeting is part of a series of meetings between the mayor and other authorities to improve coordination in this area, including the Western Regional Prosecutor’s Office. Maipú is currently experiencing the rise of some crimes such as unjustified shooting, which only in the first half of this year recorded 21 cases in the commune, 17 more than in the same period of the previous year.
