All political parties must nominate at least three women in the 6 gubernatorial elections of 2022 in Aguascalientes, Durango, Oaxaca, Hidalgo, Quintana Roo and Tamaulipas, the National Electoral Institute (INE) resolved.
In addition, local political parties must meet criteria such as giving preference to a person of a gender other than the one registered in the previous election.
If they are newly created parties, they should preferably nominate women as candidates.
There will also be renewal of municipal presidencies in Durango and the local congress in Quintana Roo.
This criterion also applied to the elections of June 6, where the INE ordered political parties to nominate only women candidates in 7 of the 15 governorships that were renewed.
During Friday’s session, the president of the Commission on Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination, Carla Humphrey, said that there is an omission of the Congress of the Union and the legislatures of the states with election next year, since they have not complied with guaranteeing the parity candidacy in governorships.
He even explained that in four entities the deadline to legislate has already expired, in one more it is close to expiring and, in the case of Hidalgo, although he was the only one who carried out the reform, it has not been promulgated or published, so it is not in force.
