Elon Musk and Brazil negotiate agreement to bring internet to the Amazon

Brazilian authorities and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk are negotiating an agreement for the company to provide satellite internet in the Amazon rainforest and help detect illegal deforestation, Jair Bolsonaro’s government said Wednesday (17.11.2021).
Brazil’s Communications Minister Fabio Faria on Monday discussed with the 50-year-old South African billionaire in Austin, United States, the possible alliance for SpaceX to provide its satellite internet service, Starlink, also to schools and health centers in remote areas.
“We’re talking about environmental issues and connecting people in Brazil’s rural schools. I’m very, very excited to start a partnership with Starlink and with SpaceX and Brazil,” Brazil’s Communications Minister Fabio Faria said in a video posted on Twitter after the meeting.
Musk, also founder and CEO of automaker Tesla, said he was “looking forward to providing connectivity basically to the underserved people of Brazil” and helping to “ensure the preservation of the Amazon.”
Starlink uses a “constellation” of more than 1,500 low-orbit satellites to provide accessible internet service from most of the planet, something that could include remote areas like the Amazon, 60 percent of which is in Brazil.
The service could be the beginning of a connectivity revolution in the South American country, where around 40 million people (19% of the population) lack access to the internet.
