AMLO asks Guanajuato to save water after running out of El Zapotillo dam

Irapuato, Guanajuato.- The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) today suggested to the authorities of the state of Guanajuato and the municipality of León to save water, this after the entity has run out of the supply of the vital liquid that would provide them with the El Zapotillo dam. This problem was one of the two for which the PAN governor Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo requested the intervention of the founder of MORENA during the meeting that both held in Irapuato and that was transmitted through social networks. When the head of the Government of Mexico took the microphone, he said that “before thinking about drilling more grounds and continuing to lower the aquifers, before making an aqueduct, you have to think about how to save water.” He also mentioned what are the details that have to be taken care of to avoid the waste of up to 40 percent of the vital liquid.” You have to think about how to save water in pipelines in cities, because it is calculated, as they are old pipes, that there is water leakage of up to 40 percent … The other thing is the irrigation districts, where there is also a lot of leakage because the canals are not in an adequate situation, there is a lack of concrete to prevent leaks and modern risk systems. All this helps to save water,” the president said. AMLO made it clear that this is an issue that will be sought to end next December during a meeting to be held by authorities from the three levels of government.” That issue was discussed by the governor at the security meeting and is part of his concern and his occupation because a program of modernization of irrigation systems is going to be implemented precisely to save water that is wasted … The governor already has a project and the Federal Government will support it so that there is no lack of water in Guanajuato,” said López Obrador.Read more: Overcrowded prisons in Guanajuato; AMLO announces actionsIt should be remembered that the El Zapotillo dam began to be built a decade ago in order to supply water to Jalisco and Guanajuato, however, after years of protests by residents of Temacapulín, Palmarejo and Acaciso who feared losing their homes and belongings due to the flooding of their towns, Conagua reached agreements in which the dam would not have the capacity originally planned, leaving the Bajio region without water.
