USA: Driver Arrested Who Ran Over Six Children in Florida and Fled The Scene

Police in Broward County (southeast Florida, USA) arrested Sean Charles Greer, 27, for allegedly running over a group of six children with his car on Monday, two of whom died and four were injured, and immediately leaving the scene of the accident. The arrest came Tuesday night after the Honda vehicle that ran over the children was located. According to local television channels, Greer admitted to being the person behind the wheel of the Honda and was charged with a dozen counts of leaving the scene of a crash with victims, tampering with evidence and driving without having the required document. The fatal hit occurred on a street in the town of Winton Manors, about 33 miles (53 km) north of Miami, when the car allegedly driven by Greer, who was on probation after being convicted of a homelift, made a dangerous and fast overtaking maneuver of a public bus. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the roadway and rammed into a group of children on a sidewalk, after which he “accelerated and fled,” the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. 5 died at the scene of the hit-and-run, and Draya Fleming, 9; Laziyah Stokes, 9, Johnathan Carter, 10, and Audre Fleming, 2, were rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, according to police. This is a heartbreaking afternoon for everyone, for the families and for the first responders who came to the scene. It’s a horrible situation for the whole community,” said Miranda Grossman, a spokeswoman for the Broward sheriff’s office. What is popularly known as a hit-and-run is a problem of proportions in the United States, where, according to various sources, nearly 1,500 people die in such accidents. According to the organization Fighting HARD (Hit and Run Driving), which is made up of relatives of victims of those accidents and calls for tougher laws to punish those who run over and flee, approximately six out of ten people mortally injured in “hit and run” cases are pedestrians.
