General Director of the Carabineros: “The problem of excess force is global”

The general director of the Carabineros, Ricardo Yáñez, is on an official visit to the Dominican Republic and spoke with the Dominican media about the criticism that the Carabineros have received for the use of excessive use of force during the social outbreak of October 2019. It is worth mentioning that the visit is due to the fact that it is collaborating with the adaptations that the Dominican police are making. Yañez maintained that “the problem of excess force is global. Today all the police in the world are facing a phenomenon that has to do with how far the legitimate use of force in the face of demonstrations goes, which are a right of citizens to do so, and where is the limit” in police actions. In this line, the general director said that the Chilean authorities are working “on a reform with several institutions” based on all the reports of international organizations in this regard, which they have transformed “into a strategic plan.” We understand that the police dynamics of security around the world today is experiencing a complex moment, that adaptations must be made that are fundamental to the requirements of society,” he said.
