President of indigenous council in Morelos murdered in his home, days after taking office

Benjamín López Palacios, president of the Indigenous Municipal Council of Xoxocotla, Morelos, was murdered inside his home on the afternoon of January 11.
According to authorities that make up the State Coordination Table for the Construction of Peace in Morelos, police and emergency services found the official in his home with injuries from gunshots.
After the identification of the president of the council, a special operation was deployed with state police, military and elements of the National Guard, who make tours of the area.

López Palacios was just 10 days into office within the Xoxocotla government, which demanded that state authorities clarify the murder.
“Xoxocotla has been a people that has been immersed in an electoral process that was very complicated and now crime takes away our hope that we owe a real change. We will work together with the corresponding authorities to find the material and intellectual authors of this crime that mourns a municipality,” the municipality published.

Meanwhile, the governor of Morelos, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, regretted the murder and promised its clarification.

I deeply regret the cowardly murder of the mayor of Xoxocotla, Benjamín López. I condemn this heinous crime, we will go all the way to bring those responsible to justice.
