Morena militants in Edomex defend Russia’s invasion

Although the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador has already condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, militants of his own party in the State of Mexico defended Russian military actions on Ukrainian territory, while blaming the United States and other Western countries for generating the recent tensions in Europe.
The organization Juventudes Morena Estado de México said in a message on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin was “forced” to act against Ukraine to protect “world peace.”
“We strongly condemn the disinformation of Western media regarding the truths and reasons for the current intervention of Russian defense troops in Ukrainian fascist territory,” the organization said in a position published on its Facebook page.

“We are convinced to ‘endorse our moral and political support’ for the difficult decision that led the government of Russia and President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin to act in legitimate defense of their people and for the sake of a major non-escalation of war, prioritizing world peace by intervening militarily in Ukrainian territory with the intention of reducing the neo-Nazi forces of coup origin that murdered entire populations of Russian descent in Donbass,” Added.
Accusations against the West
According to the Moreno organization, the United States, the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are responsible for the origin of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as they motivated Ukraine to join their bloc to confront the Russian government.
Jóvenes Morena also accused that Western countries give weapons to Ukraine and apply sanctions to Russia “with the sole intention of generating hatred and fear based on the imperialist doctrine that has polarized the world, given coups d’état, creating wars, famines and diseases with the sole excuse of bringing ‘democracy'”.

In contrast to this stance, Mexico’s government has publicly criticized Putin’s military offensive.
Even in the United Nations, he has supported calls for an immediate ceasefire, although he has advanced that he does not plan to join the economic sanctions against Russia.
Morena marks distance
On Wednesday night, the national leadership of Morena published a tweet in which it assures that it respects the freedom of thought of its militants, but is in favor of the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the pronouncement of Jóvenes Morena does not represent the official position of the political party.

Our movement expresses its commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes and the principle of non-intervention.
We respect the freedom of thought of our militants, however, we clarify that the following statement does not express Morena’s official position. pic.twitter.com/RjnXfQU43E
