Britain orders extradition to Mexico of Karime Macías

On Tuesday, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) announced that the State Department of Great Britain ordered the extradition of Karime Macías, ex-wife of the governor of the state of Veracruz, Javier Duarte, to the Mexican republic. It was in October 2019 when the former spouse of the PRI state president was arrested by the security authorities of London, England, after in 2018 she was denounced by the Veracruz government of having diverted 5.7 million dollars (more than 112 million pesos) when she served as first lady of that state. However, she paid a bail of 150,000 pounds, which allowed her to leave the penitentiary in which she was being held. Through its official Twitter account, the Federal Public Ministry made it public knowledge that the government of Great Britain had authorized the extradition of Macías to Mexican territory so that he can be accountable to the Judiciary for the crimes he is accused of. This person has fourteen days to challenge that determination, “said the autonomous body headed by prosecutor Alejandro Gertz Manero.Just last February of this year, the Attorney General’s Office said that it had won in the first instance of England the trial to extradite the former first lady of Veracruz, who said he would challenge the ruling. This is true of assuring that “not a single peso had reached her bag” of the more than 100 million pesos that she is accused of having diverted when she was at the head of the DIF, that is, when her now ex-husband Javier Duarte governed Veracruz. I had an honorary position in the DIF of Veracruz for being the wife then of who was Governor and today she is my ex-husband, a position equal to that of other ladies wives of recognized local businessmen who are part of this welfare agency. Neither they nor I manage funds, nor do we decide administrative matters or enter into any contract. Not a single weight reached my bag, to the extent that there is no proof of it in the accusation,” Karime Macías said in a statement. Meanwhile, on the resolution of the State Department of Great Britain, Macias’ lawyer said that the former state premier will not be extradited to Mexico at the end of the 14 days after the ruling, since an appeal will be filed to it.
