Army sends more soldiers to Michoacán after persecution of elements

After a group of soldiers were chased and expelled from Nueva Italia, Michoacán, by allegedly armed men aboard vans, the Army sent more reinforcements to the Tierra Caliente region.
On Monday, a video circulated showing four Army patrols fleeing civilians aboard seven vans. From one of them, the video was recorded where they insult the uniformed men.

Michoacan’s secretary of government, Carlos Torres Piña, ruled out Wednesday that it was a persecution, and said the military dodged a checkpoint with a demonstration as they headed back to their barracks.

“Informal that in a conversation we had with personnel from the 43rd military zone, which is commanded by General Covarrubias, he informed us that they made a reconnaissance tour in Cupuán, but when they came back to the facilities in Apatzingán, they were crossed by a truck at the exit of Cupuán, the same one that they dodged without major altercations, and when arriving at the municipality of Múgica, there was like a demonstration or checkpoint, let’s say so, of civilians, on the road and they did the same, dodge it, and not stop at said checkpoint, “said the official although he did not rule out that they are alleged criminals.
“Throw him away, throw him away!” they shouted from the vans until they left the village. So far, the Army has not given a position on the matter.
Violence in Michoacan has increased in recent months despite the deployment of federal elements. In coordination with the state government, the federal executive branch sent at least 3,100 uniformed personnel to the state between January and mid-March.
However, the entity closed the month of February with 250 murders, being the state with the most intentional homicides in the country, according to the most recent report of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).
