Alberto Fernández: “I came to build bridges and tear down walls”

During the press conference offered by President Alberto Fernández, after his first speech at the IX Summit of the Americas, he assured that his speech as pro tempore head of the Confederation of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) was “supported” by the leaders of the organization, including those who have “ideological differences.” In addition, he said that his point of view about exclusions was very much discussed with the president of the United States, Joe Biden. In turn, the head of state expressed his vision about the way to divide America: “I came to understand that we are a continent and that at some point we stop being North America, Central and South America and let’s be America.” In addition, he highlighted: “I only received words of support”, in relation to the strong discourse in relation to the exclusionary position of the United States with Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua. In addition, he referred to the “crisis of globalization”, which came at the worst time, given that there is a war involved. In that context, he stressed that the international situation was given “particular attention” and that for that reason he was “personally involved”, he clarified that this was the reason for his visit to Europe, his participation in the Summit, the acceptance of Joe Biden’s invitation and his future presence at the G7 and the BRIXT meeting. “They are all places where we can draw attention and demand that our voice be heard at a very critical moment in humanity,” he added. Meanwhile, the invitation to participate in the G7 has to do with their own vision of war. “The war does not have to be a discussion only of the north, it has to be a discussion of the world, because the first to suffer from the lack of wheat and hunger are going to be Latin America, Africa and Asia, for me that is the most important concern,” he said.
