Debanhi Escobar’s body to be exhumed on June 30

The Undersecretary of Public Security, Ricardo Mejía Berdeja, reported that on June 30 the body of Debanhi Escobar will be exhumed to approve the forensic opinions.
He explained that it was agreed yesterday, at a meeting attended by the state prosecutor’s office, the state government, the National Executive Commission for Victim Care and Debanhi’s parents, that the analysis of the body be carried out by expert doctors.
“It was agreed that the judicial request for the exhumation of Debanhi’s body will be made on June 30, which will allow the analysis of the body through the group of experts and medical experts for the homologation of forensic opinions previously practiced,” he said.

At a press conference, he commented that all the proceedings, interviews, actions and expert reports that have been carried out are already within the investigation folder, to which Debanhi’s parents and the Victim Care Commission have had access.

Read: Authorities to seek third technical analysis on death of young Debanhi Escobar

Debanhi disappeared April 9 in the municipality of Escobedo, Nuevo León; his body was found on April 21 inside the cistern of a hotel in Nuevo León.
The Nuevo León Prosecutor’s Office reported on May 26 that it would request the Control Judge to exhume Debanhi’s body to “standardize forensic criteria on the cause of death.”
The ruling of the Attorney General’s Office of Nuevo León concluded that the young woman died from a blow to the head. The conclusions of a second autopsy, commissioned by Debanhi’s family, dissatisfied with the first result, were revealed by the newspaper El País.
According to this second analysis, Debanhi was murdered and, although her relatives validated the information published by the newspaper, they also criticized that it was disclosed without her authorization.

The search for a third study follows the intervention of federal authorities in the investigations of the case, which has captured national and international attention and has served as an example of the high levels of violence faced by women in Nuevo León.
