Abe, 67, was giving a speech in the Nara region on the sidelines of the upcoming upper house elections on Sunday. In that context, a man shot the politician.
“I was giving a speech and a man came from behind,” a young woman who was at the event told NHK. “The first shot sounded like a toy. He did not fall but then there was a loud bang. The second shot was more visible, you could see the bang and the smoke,” he added.
Abe went into cardiorespiratory arrest during his evacuation to a hospital.
After the attack, a man was arrested, identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, a former member of the Maritime Self-Defense Force. At the moment the causes of the event have not been clarified.
