Patient slips in IMSS, suffers skull fracture and dies after poor care

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) demanded that the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) repair the damage caused to relatives of a patient who died due to inadequate medical care after presenting a skull fracture after suffering a fall in the Family Medicine Unit number 38 (UMF-38), located in Tampico, Tamaulipas.
On August 28, 2019, the victim went to the UMF-38 to have insulin applied, inside the clinic he slipped, he was treated in the emergency department where it was determined that he had a skull fracture and a clot in the brain. Despite this, health personnel failed to establish the degree of trauma and provide due care.
Subsequently, according to the human rights organization, he was sent to the Regional General Hospital number 6 of Ciudad Madero, where he remained for three days in a chair in the emergency area, because there were no stretchers available.

After undergoing surgery, he was in intensive care until, due to the deterioration of his health, he died on November 12 of that year.

“The review of the file allowed to prove that 23 hours elapsed from his admission to the emergency room until he was evaluated by treating doctors of that medical unit, despite the fact that cases of severe head trauma require immediate attention and extreme precautions had to be taken, given that the patient had multiple comorbidities,” says the CNDH investigation.

As a consequence, the health authorities failed in their duty to guarantee comprehensive medical care with quality and early diagnosis, denying the patient timely treatment.
The CNDH asked the IMSS to make comprehensive reparation for the damage caused to the indirect victims of this case, as well as to grant them the psychological, thanatological attention and medications they require according to their situation.
