The idea was inspired by the “orange”: the speech of 15 hours and 3 minutes made by Deputy Jaime Naranjo on November 8 and 9, 2021, during the debate of the second constitutional accusation against the then President Sebastián Piñera, as a result of his involvement in the Pandora Papers. The goal was to “wait” for the end of the preventive quarantine of deputies Giorgio Jackson and Jorge Sabag, since the opposition needed their votes for the approval of the accusation. Then, Naranjo decided to perform “filibustering techniques” (parliamentary obstructionism) until the arrival of the legislators.
This time it is not necessary to prolong the time, the idea is to take all the time in the world to explain in all its extension, chapter by chapter, the proposal of Constitution that will be plebiscite on September 4.
The idea started from social networks and grew little by little until the journalist and writer Francisca Solar – who will act as moderator of the marathon – decided to shape the popular outcry. And who better to perform a reading marathon than Deputy Jaime Naranjo, although this time he was enthusiastic to accompany him Deputy Carmen Hertz. In this way, they will take turns reading the chapters of the constitutional proposal and will comment on them.
“We are going to stop at the relevant points and explain them in the most pedagogical, simple and didactic way possible. The idea is for people to understand how what is written in this book will affect them in their lives. In this we will be helped by the ‘doctor of the new Constitution’, Rodrigo Mayorga.”
Non-stop
The reading will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5. On the same day that the television election slot begins – they wanted to coincide symbolically. It will be broadcast through La Voz De Los Que Sobran and will be replicated live on different YouTube channels and various social networks. The team is preparing a script and giving it a television format, of which they have not yet advanced details.
“This has nothing to do with the Apruebo campaign, it is simply the initiative of two parliamentarians with a pedagogical spirit,” says Naranjo. He adds: “I don’t know if we will exceed 15 hours of my speech, but it is estimated that it will take us about 10 hours at least. The idea is to be there until the candles don’t burn. This is non-stop, nothing about going to eat or have a coffee, it’s a ma-ra-tón.”
Nor are they preparing with breathing exercises or gargling with honey. “I’m an amateur at this, I’m just like that. For the speech of the accusation I did not have any problem, but when I finished, the voice went out and I had to stay 24 hours without speaking, “says Deputy Naranjo.
