South Korea Offers North Aid Package in Exchange for Denuclearization

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol announced today that he will try again to negotiate with North Korea. The South Korean leader will offer leader Kim Jong-un a comprehensive aid package in exchange for his denuclearization. North Korea refused on several occasions. The offer comes in response to Kim Jong-un’s latest speech, in which he threatened to “eliminate” Seoul authorities over a recent coronavirus outbreak. Likewise, the North Korean representative announced a month ago that his country is “ready to mobilize” its nuclear weapons in a war against the United States and South Korea. Yoon called denuclearization “essential” to maintaining the peace of the territory. He also explained that the aid plan offered would include food, energy and support to modernize North Korea’s public infrastructure.” The bold initiative I envision will significantly improve the North Korean economy and the lives of its people, if the North stops developing its nuclear program and undertakes a genuine and substantive process of denuclearization,” the South’s politician said. For its part, the chances that Pyongyang, north Korea’s capital, will accept the deal are slim because most of the country’s gross domestic product is directly related to the commercial activity of nuclear programs. The United States and South Korea said North Korea is preparing for its seventh nuclear test, having reached a record number of weapons tests this year, which included the launch of a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile, for the first time since 2017.
