Reform Initiatives Threaten Clean Elections: Academics

Academics from different universities and institutes sent a letter to the Chamber of Deputies, where they warn that the initiatives presented for an electoral reform put at risk the credibility of the electoral processes in Mexico.
The 75 specialists believe that these reform initiatives are based on false ideas that would only aggravate the problems they seek to solve.
“We consider the recent electoral reform initiatives a threat to the holding of clean and fair elections, the elementary political procedure of any free, plural and democratic society,” they said in the document delivered to Deputies.

They maintain that it is a “political responsibility” to reject these initiatives of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whose content they described as “anti-pluralist.”

“These initiatives appear to respond to a temptation to take advantage of the power granted by citizens in free and fair elections to undermine them. It is a very undemocratic temptation and that, if it materializes, would put the country in a dangerous and precarious political condition,” the academics said.
They even pointed out that in the best of cases, the reforms “would seriously unbalance the conditions of electoral competition,” to return to a stage of controlled elections in favor of the government in turn.
The group of academics also endorsed the opinion of the European Commission for Democracy through Law, which warned that the electoral reform proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador does not guarantee that the institutes have independence and impartiality in the votes.
